Etxea or the Basque Home

Across the Basque Country and especially in Urrugne you will see our famous whitewashed homesteads, called Etxea in Basque (pronounce ett-chay-ah), whose woodwork is usually painted either "Basque" or "ox blood" red. There are also other colours such as green and blue, more present along the coast.

The front of houses usually face eastwards to protect themselves from the wind and rain coming in from the ocean.

The whole family lives there are and they played a major role in Basque society at the time.
